This book is one of the best written about the List Murders in 1971. The author does a fantastic job of weaving the facts together. The book is very detailed, and covers every aspect of this unimaginable crime.
The one thing I had trouble with was the fictionalized conversations with all the characters in the book- both living and murdered. There was no way the author could have witnessed these events because no one survived other than John E. List, and he was on the lam for 18 years. The chapter which puts you in the house as arsonists prepare to burn it down is just too hard to believe, and a stretch for me. It's just not really my preference in writing style.

Also in the middle of the book, the drawn diagram showing the location of the bodies in the ballroom is inaccurate. You can Google the crime scene pics yourself and see.
I'd suggest it to anyone who has in interest in this shocking crime.

Great read, but very sad and disturbing.
This is a must read for true crime buffs. I have read it three or four times and I pick up on something new each time I read it....
The best book regarding this tragedy.
Was the exact book my wife was looking for
This book was full of information that you felt you pretty much know the whole story. There were so many people who co-operated with the police that you heard from family, neighbors, employers. I read so many books that tell very little about how people heard or reacted to the murders, or even how it effected them. I wasn't bored for a minute. Great book!
This is not only one of the best if not THE best true crime account I've ever read, it is one of the best written books I've ever read period. From the opening paragraph, this author draws you into the haunted and bizarre true story of John List and his cold blooded self centered murder of his entire family. The author truly works a magic that makes you feel like you are right there, hearing the eerie music over the intercom when the bodies were first discovered.
Book is way too long in my opinion. Overall, it’s a very good read - however I’ve read two other books on this case and this is my least favorite one...
