Just when you think it could not get any worse for Ginger, another disaster happens as a result of her effort to improve her situation. Oh, her listings were like some we toured in Houston 46 years ago, as we walked through the house of the seller who couldn’t find his pet python, the one with bullet holes in the back windows, and the one with mold three inches thick in the corner shower. One can identify with her exaggerated descriptions of her listings that stray from reality!
The mother-daughter bonding scene on the lake was so funny, but the relationship these two is mired in the love to help each other no matter how bad it gets. I found this chapter and others hilarious. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a little light-hearted humor to escape for a few hours from the political and social malaise of our society.

I never realized how funny the real estate sales profession could be! Erica Ferencik's wildly funny and semi-tragic tear through one suburban realtor's worst (and zaniest) nightmare is a great read and a telling parody about modern life as only a madwoman could live it. There's a moment when Ginger Kanadoo's ever-mounting self-destructive episodes build to a point where you think "there can't be anymore; not another screw-up to add to the mix", but then, of course, she's out in a boat being shot at, or stealing bananas off the back of a supermarket loading dock. If you like to laugh, turn off the TV and pick up "Cracks In The Foundation"!
This is just about the most hilarious book I have ever read. From the minute I met her, I was in love with Ginger, for whom nothing in life goes right. Who can't identify with a character so passionate and yet so thwarted at every turn? Throw in a ghost, a crazed daughter, lots of wine, some outhouses and a bunch of wet-your-pants funny real estate scenes and you've got "Cracks in the Foundation."

I don't read humorous books that often but I picked this one up on a whim. If you know someone who could use a laugh, buy this book now! If you know a self-important real estate agent, send it to them and they'll see the light! The social satire is biting, too. What a breath of fresh air!
This is a truly hilarious book. I laughed out loud reading this book probably more often than any other book I've read. Not exaggerating. Ginger Kanadoo is a fantastic main character she does the wrong thing with so much verve and she's totally lovable the whole time. Great cast of supporting characters, as well. And the plot twists are excellent. Her rivalry with another realtor drives a lot of the plot, but her relationship with her daughter is also a big part of this and well done. So much great absurdity here. A total treat from start to finish.
Every so often it's necessary for any reader to hunker down and devour a really insane book, and this is right at the top of the list! It's peopled with a motley crew of loonies, including the heroine realtor, her wiccan daughter, her 90some year old aunt who's also a realtor, and her mother (Big Alice) who's in a nursing home and spends her time speeding off to bingo games in her wheelchair. The plot initially revolves around Ginger Kanadoo's attempt to sell an outhouse (albeit an historic one), and there are wiccan rituals, a tour of a haunted house, and a Ouija board. The story just goes from one absurdity to another, and I found myself laughing out loud, much to the annoyance of my wife. If you need something well-written but goofy to cheer up a bad day, I highly recommend this book!
Erica Ferencik clearly knows real estate, and her love for her characters comes through on every page of Cracks in the Foundation. When you read satire this good and this balanced (even an absurd universe needs rules; see under Candide), you realize how many satirists go too far too soon. Ferencik has just the right touch. Well done!
Erica Ferencik has written a truly funny book, and that is not easy to do. So many comic novels end up being clever conceits that are stretched beyond their funny points to make a whole novel. Not so here. Her main character, Ginger Kanadoo is such an irrepressible force of nature that you can't help but love her, like a puppy who keeps knocking things over and tracking mud all over on her way to bring you the paper she's fetched for you. Ginger has a kind of manic buoyancy that makes you want to see her pull of more and more ridiculous exploits in pursuit of the next sale, or the next listing, or, better, yet, in pursuit of the next glass of white zin.

Ferencik is able to sustain a high level of humor throughout, accomplishing a marvelous enmeshing of satire and farce- not an easy task. She keeps the laughs coming, often out-load throaty ones, but underneath manages to deliver a critique of a certain kind of consumerist culture and its knock-on effects on the notions of home, family and work.
