This is the first in a series of Florentine murder mysteries. Sicilian, Marshal Guarnaccia, is employed as a police investigator in Florence, Italy.
A murder is committed, but the Marshal is ill with the flu. Carabiniere Bacci, a police trainee, is assigned to work with the Marshal. However, while the Marshal recovers, Bacci is indispensable in assisting The Captain, as a translator when two English detectives arrive from Scotland Yard. The English detectives were dispatched to Florence because the murdered Englishman was from a prominent family.
A small slice of the main character, Marshal Guarnaccia’s personality, is revealed by his love of family and his fellowman. He appears as a sensitive conscientious man, who would rather solve the murder than be in bed. Otherwise, with him being ill, you will not get much concerning his personality, behavior, and personal values.
‘Green’ trainee, Carabiniere Bacci revealed a character change. I think he begin to learn police procedures and the importance of observation under the guidance of the Marshal and the Captain.
The issue I found annoying was not knowing which character spoke when three or more people were in a room. This did not discourage me from enjoying the book.
Although not set in stone, an average crime/detective or noir novel is between 80,000 and 90,000 words.
Florentines and the English characters are interesting. This was a surprise whodunit that read more like a short story to me. But Ms. Nabb tied up the ending in a timely fashion, in a little more than 200 pages.

This was an extremely atmospheric mystery, bringing Florence alive with myriad little details. I think my only disappointment was when the actual murder proved to be not that complicated.
Read her books in order. So far she gets better with every book.
Fun Read............Lots of local color...........amusing, sad.............found myself really enjoying the different characters. If you enjoy mysteries in different countries, try this one.
I almost gave this book 3 stars, but I decided the problem with it was me. I had set such high expectations for it, that there was nothing for me but to be slightly disappointed. So, I recommend this book to those readers who can go into it without setting high expectations and I suspect you will find it very enjoyable.
I was just introduced to this series and will read the whole lot. I love the characters and the mix of humor and suspense.
Interesting read, cast of characters and a good setting. The author writes as though they have personal knowledge of the setting and inhabitants of the locale. Story demonstrates that good police work often depends on knowledge of the local people and their habits not guns and physical prowess.
Magdalen Nabb puts you right into the scene, and for those who love Florence, Italy, it is a delight to read. The writing is good, includes humor, but mostly visual details of the city and really well defined characters. The Marshal Guanaccia of the Caribinieri is sick with the flu at the beginning and so you think he will be out of the crime solving of the death of an unpleasant Englishman who had an illegal business. However, with a young and inexperienced Lieutenant he has to take over and right up until the end you wonder if there is a murder. But keep up to the end to find out.
